Galloway is delighted to announce the birth of a red panda, continuing GWCP’s fantastic breeding record for this endangered species.
Visitors may be able to catch a glimpse of one of the Zoo's newest arrivals; a rare Red Panda cub that is beginning to take it's first steps into the enclosure, from a nest box that has been it's home since it was born on June 9th 2007.
As the cub is extremely shy keepers have been unable to determine the new Red Panda's sex and it has not yet been named.
Red Pandas are slightly larger than the domestic cat and native to the forests of the Himalayas and mountain areas of China and Myanmar. They are endangered as a result of habitat destruction and fragmentation due to agriculture and timber extraction.
The young Red Panda is born into a nest of twigs and grass after a gestation period of three months with their eyes and ears closed and have a layer of thick grey fur.
