Galloway Wildlife Conservation Park is involved in supporting European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) Madagascar Campaign 2007, the main targets of the campaign are to raise public awareness to collect funds for conservation projects on the island to promote eco-tourism to Madagascar and to promote twinning between EAZA members and National Parks and other protected areas.
Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world, 1600km in length and covering 590,000km2. The striking diversity and varied topography of Madagascar has led to the island being called the '8th continent'. But the island's unique flora and fauna is under threat, mainly due to human population growth. Large scale habitat alteration and degradation, habitat loss, pollution, hunting, introduced species and trade are the main reasons for the rapid decline.
The fundraising goal is 500,000 Euro, we hope to target £1,000 towards their conservation projects, including a group of Ring-tailed Lemurs and a pair of Black & White Ruffed Lemurs. |
